Cohesion and Stability of Metal Nanowires: A Quantum Chaos Approach⋆
نویسندگان
چکیده
A remarkably quantitative understanding of the electrical and mechanical properties of metal wires with a thickness on the scale of a nanometer has been obtained within the free-electron model using semiclassical techniques. Convergent trace formulas for the density of states and cohesive force of a narrow constriction in an electron gas, whose classical motion is either chaotic or integrable, are derived. Mode quantization in a metallic point contact or nanowire leads to universal oscillations in its cohesive force, whose amplitude depends only on a dimensionless quantum parameter describing the crossover from chaotic to integrable motion, and is of order 1nN, in agreement with experiments on gold nanowires. A linear stability analysis shows that the classical instability of a long wire under surface tension can be completely suppressed by quantum effects, leading to stable cylindrical configurations whose electrical conductance is a magic number 1, 3, 5, 6,... times 2e/h, in accord with recent results on alkali metal nanowires.

Metal Nanowires: Quantum Transport, Cohesion, and Stability
Metal nanowires exhibit a number of interesting properties: their electrical conductance is quantized, their shot-noise is suppressed by the Pauli principle, and they are remarkably strong and stable. We show that many of these properties can be understood quantitatively using a nanoscale generalization of the free-electron model. Possible technological applications of nanowires are also discus...
متن کاملStability of gold nanowires at large Au - Au separations
The unusual structural stability of gold nanowires at large separations of gold atoms is explained from first-principles quantum mechanical calculations. We show that undetected light atoms, in particular hydrogen, stabilize the experimentally observed structures, which would be unstable in pure gold wires. The enhanced cohesion is due to the partial charge transfer from gold to the light atoms...
متن کاملHybrid Control to Approach Chaos Synchronization of Uncertain DUFFING Oscillator Systems with External Disturbance
This paper proposes a hybrid control scheme for the synchronization of two chaotic Duffing oscillator system, subject to uncertainties and external disturbances. The novelty of this scheme is that the Linear Quadratic Regulation (LQR) control, Sliding Mode (SM) control and Gaussian Radial basis Function Neural Network (GRBFNN) control are combined to chaos synchronization with respect to extern...
متن کاملFluctuational Instabilities of Alkali and Noble Metal Nanowires
We introduce a continuum approach to studying the lifetimes of monovalent metal nanowires. By modelling the thermal fluctuations of cylindrical nanowires through the use of stochastic Ginzburg-Landau classical field theories, we construct a self-consistent approach to the fluctuation-induced “necking” of nanowires. Our theory provides quantitative estimates of the lifetimes for alkali metal nan...
متن کاملStability and symmetry breaking in metal nanowires: The nanoscale free-electron model
A general linear stability analysis of simple metal nanowires is presented using a continuum approach that correctly accounts for material-specific surface properties and electronic quantum-size effects. The competition between surface tension and electron-shell effects leads to a complex landscape of stable structures as a function of diameter, cross section, and temperature. By considering ar...
